Shelter of Hope runs community health facilities at its project sites. The health facility in Kagan, Homa-bay County caters for the emergency health needs of the surrounding community. The health facility has qualified doctor, nurse, laboratory technician and volunteers. The organization’s free annual medical camp do take place yearly at the health facilities; Kiambiu – Nairobi or Kagan – Homa bay County, depending on the areas of need and the availability of funds. The medical camp mostly focuses on examination and treatment of heart diseases, ear, nose, throat and dental diseases. Advocacy on preventive measures are also carried out so as to educate the communities on common disease prevention hence measures like immunization, deworming, healthy living are done. Examination and treatment of Malaria, TB and HIV management are also conducted. Medicines are also dispensed for free based on prescriptions from the foreign and resident volunteer doctors who help in this worthy initiative.
In 2016, the Shelter of Hope free annual medical camp also incorporated free cancer check ups as cancer is a reality killer disease in Kenya. The cancer check ups included: Breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer.
